St Peter's Book Circle was initially established in 2001 by several mums with children at St Peter's School, in Earley, Reading UK. Since then, our children have moved on and we now have a wide range of members.

Our book for January  is 'Mr Pip' by Lloyd Jones

Who are we?

The group now consists of around 15 members, all women and ranging in age from 30s to 60s.  We meet once a month to discuss a book that we have all been reading. We take it in turns to select a book, basing our selections on the sets of book club books available at our local libraries.

What do we read?

Our reading material has been wide and varied - from Cold Mountain to Tulip Fever, and from Nana to Harry Potter. To see the range of our reading, view our Reading Lists.

How do we run our meetings?

We take home the latest book and have around 4 weeks in which to read it. One member of the group, usually the one who chose the title, will prepare some information about the book to start off the discussion.

This could include:

Biographical details
Historical context
Information on the subject discussed in the book
Reviews by newspapers, other websites etc.
Published interviews with the authors
Dressing up (and Undressing Mr Darcy)!

We then take it in turns to give our opinions on the book. Each person is able to give their opinion on the book without interruption. We usually finish with an opinion on whether we would read another book by the same author and whether we'd recommend the book to a friend. We then have a group discussion on aspects of the book that arise from the our individual verdicts on the book. This can be far reaching - discussing attitudes to bereavement, family life and belief in God - to fairly frivolous discussions of how authors approached the writing of sex scenes. As we add to our reading lists, it has been interesting to see how different authors cover similar themes.

What else do we do?

Each week we all contribute a £1 to group funds. This has been used to pay for several trips such as:

Open air Shakespeare staged in the Abbey Ruins in Reading by Progress Theatre. In 2006, their summer production was 'The Winter's Tale. We went to their production of 'A midsummer night's dream' in July 2007 and to the 2008 production of 'The Taming of the Shrew'
A visit to Jane Austen's house at Chawton, Hampshire  (with well organised pub lunch and afternoon tea!)
Trips to see films that have been made from some of our books e.g. Charlotte Gray, Girl with a Pearl Earring, Memoirs of a Geisha, Marie Antoinette and Perfume.
Social events at Christmas and Summer which usually involve a meal and a devilish quiz devised by our leader
We have also persuaded a member of library staff to give an insight into other people's reading habits and how books are chosen by libraries.

Our meetings are also a chance to swap books, discuss newly published books and make reading suggestions for us and our children.

Where do we get our books from?

In order to cut costs, we have used reading group sets from our local libraries. We use the Wokingham Libraries collection and the Reading Libraries collections (over 100 titles). In this way, we can obtain 15 copies of the same book at once and have them on loan for over a month.
